Blocked in at a Cyprus car park: what to do (and what not to)

Look first for a note on the dash, then ask at the shop, gym or reception: whoever blocked you is often sitting a hundred metres away. Nobody returns — call Cyprus Police, do not remove the car yourself. Do not push the other car, deflate tyres or park across: the authority removes it, and the damage can be yours.

Frequently asked questions

Can I call a wrecker myself for the car that boxed me in?

On a public road, no. Police decide whether there is an offence and whether removal is ordered. A private wrecker without an order leaves you the bill. On truly private land the manager — not the boxed-in neighbour — may remove if there are rules and signs.

Should I call 199 when I am blocked?

When you are actually blocked on a public road or there is an emergency (injury, a child in heat, fire access). For being late to work, try a note and the guard first. A false call is punishable.

Will Police enter a complex courtyard?

Not always. On a public road the traffic rules and removal powers apply. In a complex, mall or basement the manager's rules apply. Ask the guard. The authority decides whether the land is a «road» — the answer changes from municipality to municipality.

May I leave a note or write on the bodywork?

A note under the wiper is fine and, if the other driver returns in ten minutes, the fastest. Do not write on the body, snap the wiper or deflate tyres: that is damage to someone else's property. A plate message, for example re:plyte, reaches whoever claimed the plate without publishing your number.
