Someone hit my parked car in Cyprus and left: what to do

A scratch in a car park and an empty seat are common. The first job is evidence, not the owner’s phone. Whoever left had a duty to stop and report. You do not get a right to open the register. Cyprus Police and the insurer work with it; you do not.

Do this now

Safety. Injured or fire — 199 or 112. Otherwise photos and notes.
Photos. Damage, the whole car, the plate if visible, the place, neighbouring cars, the time on screen.
Place and time. Date, hour, mall or complex name, floor.
Cameras and witnesses. Guard, shop, neighbour. Name and number; do not put the plate in a group chat.
Police. Even a scratch often needs a report for insurance.
Your insurer. As fast as the policy asks. They query the register; you do not.

The Commissioner treats registration data as personal data. If the other driver left, Police and insurance remain.

Frequently asked questions

Should I call 199 or 112 at once?

If someone is hurt, there is a fire, or the car is still a danger — yes. For a scratch in an empty car park, say clearly there is no casualty. A false call is punishable.

Will the register give me the other number?

No. Public services do not open the owner's mobile. Insurer and Police work with the register, not the neighbour. An anonymous card form is not an official channel.

Does insurance run without a Police report?

Many policies ask for a Police report or at least written notice. Read your policy; do not guess. An amicable statement exists when *both* parties are present and agree — not when the other driver left.

If the other plate is visible?

Write it down, photograph it, give it to Police and your insurer. Do not pull the name yourself. A plate message only if you want to talk and the other party is on the same app — it does not replace a report.
